| Sometimes I think I have come up with something when in fact someone else already thought of it and probably told me about it a long time ago. But people do that to me too. The point is that someone does something with the idea. But that's also why trying to take credit for everything is a waste of time.
I was lying in bed having the soundest sleep I've had in weeks. I haven't been able to sleep for more than five or six hours for a long time. And it's not even my schedule doing that, I just keep waking up early now. I never wake up early. But today I slept in. I would have set my alarm, but I haven't had to for so long. I know exactly why I feel so different today; I have what I've come to call presentation sickness. Last night, when I got to talk about SIFE and La Sierra University to the freshmen and their parents, I got the feeling I haven't had since we presented in the SIFE National Competiton in the top 20 of a thousand something round. It was amazing. But it isn't giving the presentation that gets my heart racing, my head frozen, and my thoughts going a mile a minute, it's what is reflected back at me as I speak. I have been sitting in the SIFE office all summer working on stuff and probably getting a little pessimistic because only one or two of us seemed to be doing anything. Well there really weren't more than one or two of us anyway, it's summer duh. But I have gone too long without interacting with new people who are passionate about something. All it takes is for one person to say "how can I get involved?" and bam! I go totally crazy for at least the next few days. I have found the motivation again. I should have realized it by just thinking the opposite about what brings me down. I complain so much about people not getting involved, I should have figured out that what drives me is when people do get involved. That's another reason why I am so blessed to have Lovelyn in my life. She works so hard and is so passionate about what she does, expecting nothing in return. She drove me to get more involved as she got more involved, she has that gift.
So then it hit me. That's exactly what I need to do. Alot of other people react the same way. I need to turn things up instead of complaining about not having enough people.
But the idea I had that caused me to shoot out of bed just a few minutes ago was this. The root of the reason why students leave is not low academic performance, it's not even financial situations. The key to retention is getting students involved. Students who get involved in their own college experience get better grades and yes even better scholarships. But it gives them a personal investment in their school. I could like another school equally based on what I could learn in the classroom and what it would cost, but why would I leave? I love this place. It is that foundational connection that at least gets students to want to stay after their freshmen year. And the best part about all of this is that when students get involved, they then have the power to change everything else that causes problems for students. We can help tutor each other. We can help raise scholarship funds for students by working with the community. I truly believe that any problem or need a student has can be best met when other students get involved.
There are 50,000 college students in this city. That is enough to decide any election or proposition vote it might hold. That is power. Why do you let a small group of people try and manage everything for you? There are nearly 2,000 of us on this campus. How dare we stand by and not do something to make it better.
I have a feeling that this year's freshmen class is going to teach us all a lesson.

| Dear Government of Sudan,
A bunch of us got together and we decided that you need to let us keep the peace (keep you from killing civilians). So if you would just go ahead and give us your permission by signing here, we will go ahead and start doing things you don't want us to do. Once again, we made a decision based on civilians continuing to die for no reason in Sudan, but we won't actually implement our decision unless you decide to let us.
Thanks,
United Nations
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council on Thursday
voted to create a United Nations peacekeeping force in Sudan's Darfur
region, despite the Khartoum government's strong opposition. The vote was 12 in favor, with abstentions from Russia, China and Qatar, the only Arab council member. But the troops will not be deployed until Sudan consents. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They voted to create a peacekeeping force despite government opposition, but they will only deploy this force with government approval. Wow. That is so every U.N. resolution ever.
That's right, the superpowers of the world are going to make a massive force to keep the peace and there's nothing you can do about it. Ha! Take that! We are going to keep the peace right from our little base over here, yeah! Just sign here so we can actually do something. Please. What do you mean no? Awww cmon...That's it! Now we're really mad. Expect a new resolution describing how angry we are at you and that we denounce you denouncing our other resolution. Could you sign that one though so we can officially be angry at you. No? Hmmmmm...
